Evidence #7 Reflection: Non LMS build
Outcome Addressed: Demonstrate basic competency with design and implementation within a variety of LMS and non-LMS environments and tools.
I have chosen my Non LMS build because I felt that it really helped me to be able to realize that I don’t have to be stuck to one format for teaching online. I can develop my own tools to enhance my students’ learning. It is also really fun being able to “play” with all the fascinating tools that are out there. I learned that there is more than one way to develop a Learning Management System that could be tailored to my specific needs for my students. I also discovered that the typical LMSs are geared toward one focal point of use. The typical LMS requires only those who are part of the “class” to have access, whereas a non LMS can be tailored to allow others who are not in the class to participate. This type of non-LMS (PLE) has really interested me, and I am interested in looking into it in more depth. The evidence piece I have chosen is the “Non-LMS Build”. We were to research different course building tools that were not a traditional LMS that you would find with most online courses. The assignment was for OLTD 504.
I think that I have a fairly good “handle” on developing a NON-LMS now as a result of being able to “play” and discover some of the tools that are available. I learned that there is a “PLE” (Personal Leaning Environment), which has really interested me. I feel that my capabilities and confidence to develop my own LMS, has been greatly increased. I believe that the evidence I have submitted shows a “constructivist” approach as I “constructed” my Non-LMS with full rein to discover my own tools. The strengths of my chosen piece are that I chose specific “tools” that were useful to me and that I will use in my own practice.
The above mentioned outcome is important in my own practice in that it is about designing and implementing, which is so important for students to be able to do, not to mention, fun.

Evidence # 7: Non LMS Build
I have found, after reviewing the Non LMS Wiki, that there are a lot of amazing resources to build a Non LMS platform for learning. I realized that there are great sites that incorporate many of the items in the four quadrant areas we were to research. If I did not have access to sites that incorporated the items included in the four quadrant areas, then I would use the following to build a Non LMS:
- For the assessment I quadrant for e-portfolio and presenting, I would choose Wix and Soo Meta. Wix is easy for younger children to use to set up their own website and Soo Meta is a fun and easy way for children to do a presentation where the development is straightforward and the end result is dynamic.
- For the assessment II quadrant I like the idea of Kidblog where students have a safe site to post items and it is easy for them to navigate. The Rubistar is great for the development of rubrics. This can enable students to help develop content and criteria as well as allowing students to access and evaluate themselves. I like the ideas of using Flubaroo for quizzes and Inbox (google docs) for students submitting assignments. They both use Google docs which helps keep assignments and test centralized and are quite easy to use.
- For developing a sense of community, I would use Collaborize Classroom for discussion and discourse because there is no need for a Facebook or Twitter account, which many young children are not old enough to have. Twiddla is a good tool for a meeting place, something like Blackboard Collaborate. It is more kid friendly and easy to use. I would also use epals and Blogger (within Google drive). These would work well for learning networks and communication. I love the idea of sharing with children all over the world as epals allows for global community building. Blogger works with Google drive and is quite easy for students to use and share.
- For content I would pick Google Sites as it can serve as a dashboard and it can incorporate calendar, file sharing, lessons, inbox, blogger, and Flubaroo.
If I were to pick an LMS other than Moodle or D2L as an all in one package that would include all of the above topics, I would use either Edmodo or Haiku. I have looked and played around with both. I really like the ease of Haiku in setting up pages and young students finding their way around the site. The only thing that is really different between Edmodo and Haiku is that Haiku does not have badges. They both have all of the components needed to develop a really rich learning system.

Reflection for Evidence #8: Final Project for OLTD 504
Final project for OLTD 504 Outcome: Examine current research around best practices and emerging practices for both LMS and non-LMS environments.
I have chosen my final project as my evidence piece as I feel that it is a good culmination of my learning for this course. It is a video using “Soometa” (http://www.metta.io ) Voki” (http://www.voki.com) , and “Xtranormal” (http://www.xtranormal.com)
I learned that I prefer to use Non-LMS tools to develop courses, mainly because of the freedom to be creative. I have also learned about the emergence of “PLEs” (Personal Learning Environments). The evidence has impacted my knowledge and insights to my teaching and learning online in that I have a much better understanding and excitement about the tools that are available. I am particularly excited about how online learning is moving toward individualized learning through PLEs and how the emergence of inclusion of others in online learning is being incorporated into online learning.
The above mentioned outcome is really important for me as an educator in that it is important to remember that education as a whole is evolving. We are on the cusp of something extremely important in how we educate today. I realize how important it is to keep up on the latest best practices and emerging practices if I am to be the best facilitator I can be. This course, as a whole, has made me realize just how important it is to be “in the loop” with emerging teaching practices to better benefit my students.
