I have gone into a fair amount of detail in my final paper/project for OLTD 509. I thought I would just do a little personal reflection of the past six weeks here.
I loved the diversity of activities for this course. We got to "play", discuss, share, and present.
At the beginning of the course I thought, ok, Immersive innovative technologies, sounds interesting. I thought that we would play around and investigate innovative technologies, which was part of it. What I found so profound was how Avi had us looking at immersive innovative technologies with our students and colleagues in mind. I was shocked to learn that innovation was not just about technologies, as I previously assumed, but about how our pedagogy influences what and how we do things in our schools.
I have really been enlightened by how "flow" (Csikszentmihalyi, 2010) and the "Causal Loop" (Senge, 1990) (retrieved from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_archetype) influences so many things in what I am trying to achieve in my school and classroom. I have started asking more questions of my students and staff to get to the root of why they may not want to do something. Boy, has this made things so much clearer and lessened my frustration as to how to find solutions for the reluctance of my students and colleagues to do certain things. It has forced me to look beyond the surface and delve deeper. It has also helped me to focus on my reactions and how I present things. It is not all about producing flashy end results, but about the journey. Making short, small trips that will end in the final destination of innovation.
The most fun I had was working with Kris and Gord Holden on the Virtual Worlds presentation. The work load was a lot, as Kris and I totally revamped what we were going to do, however, the end result was so rewarding, that the amount of time we spent doesn't matter now. I am excited about using the free Virtual World provided by BC Learning Nexus (http://bclearningnexus.ca) in my school. We have already picked a name "Creators". My principal is also happy that there is no cost to us. Kris and I plan on connecting our two classes later on. I am excited to take this journey with all its unknowns and quirks.
I am looking forward to looking at more posts and comments over the next while. I wish I had more time right now to have a more in-depth look at the amazing stuff everyone has done.
